Never one for the bar scene
The bar scene from A Beautiful Mind has always troubled me, just as it did when I recently watched the movie for the umpteenth time.
Here’s the setting: Nash and four buddies are huddled around a barroom table when a blond and her four friends enter the room. As the guys discuss the possibilities for the evening, Nash, in a true ah-ha moment, formulates and verbalizes his equilibrium theory.
Now here’s my problem: When Nash discusses the best strategy, he uses we to imply that he is involved in both the means and the ends. However, when the guys and gals are shown paired and dancing in his proposed solution, Nash and the blond are nowhere to be seen.
So is the true Nash equilibrium just a one-over on your buddies? Hmmm.
